Richard Grindrod

Richard joined Hollyport in January 2015 and was promoted to Partner in 2021.

Richard began his career in the Banking and Capital Markets audit and assurance department at PwC, where he qualified as an ACA. Subsequently, Richard joined the Transaction Services department at PwC, focused on Financial Services transactions. He advised both private equity and corporate clients on a number of transactions.

Richard graduated from Newcastle University with a 1st Class Honours in BA Business, Accounting and Finance (a collaboration between PwC, Newcastle University and the ICAEW). His degree included three, four-month work placements at PwC.

Ed Gay

Ed joined Hollyport in May 2011, and is a Partner in the Investment Team and also has responsibility for Finance, Monitoring and Reporting functions.

Ed started his career in the audit and assurance department at Deloitte, where he qualified as an ACA in the Products & Services team in London. Post qualification he moved to the corporate finance department of the Dawnay, Day Group, where he specialised in private and public M&A and equity capital markets. Before joining Hollyport, he worked at Arbuthnot Securities, where he worked as a corporate financier advising public and private companies on a range of corporate finance transactions.

Ed holds an honours degree in Natural Sciences from Durham University and is an FCA.

Steven Nicholls

Steve has been a direct private equity investor since 1997. He Joined Hollyport in December 2013 as a Partner and is responsible for investment activities.

Having trained as an accountant, Steve worked at SBC Warburg for 7 years before joining 3i in 1997. Steve has extensive geographic experience having led investments across Europe and North America and directly overseen investments in Asia. Having led 3i’s UK Private Equity business he became a founding Partner of 3i Growth Capital, chaired the Investment Committee and was responsible for leading 3i’s first ever Growth Capital fundraising of €1.2billion.

Steve holds an MBA from Cranfield School of Management.

John Carter

John has been a private equity investor since 1987, initially as a direct investor, before focusing on the secondary market from 2002. As Chief Executive of Hollyport he is responsible for all of its investment activities.

John started in private equity at 3i, where he was latterly a Director heading the London investment team with responsibility for mid-market buyout and growth capital investments. During this period, he gained specific experience in the healthcare, business services and retail sectors. John was a co-founder of Hollyport in 2006.

John holds an honours degree in Engineering from University College London and worked for Unilever in his early career.
